Supporting Performers

The Associated Studios Fundraising Programme

Since its formation the Studios have been committed to encouraging and supporting  performers with extraordinary vocal & performing talent, who cannot afford professional training.

The following are testimonials documenting the vital importance of making training available to talented performers lacking the financial means for full fees, and the benefits of top level training:

Caspian Moyo (Musical Theatre Performer now in Thriller Live):’The bursary I received from Associated Studios was nothing short of a Godsend; it was an opportunity for me learn something different that would allow me to progress in my career. At the time I certainly was not able to afford training and being able to have a place free of charge was an absolute honour! It was a challenging experience, however I knew that through the hurdles only good things would transpire. The bursary that AS gave me allowed me to walk into auditions and to be successful  by applying what I had learnt. All I had to do was turn up! Particularly, the care and attention that Leontine Hass showed me made the experience worth it above all. That woman inspired me greatly. I have been a cast member in the West End since attending AS. I am beyond grateful and I am not done with Associated Studios.’

Alexander Learmonth (Opera Singer): ‘I was one of those who benefited from a bursary to discount the fees for my attendance on the Intensive Opera Course at Associated Studios in Spring 2011.I found the course immensely useful: individual voice lessons, group acting, movement, and text lessons, as well as master classes from some of the top level voice coaches, directors and conductors in the business. I felt that every aspect of my performance skills were improved, but perhaps the biggest change was a mental one; I realized that to succeed in the music business it was never enough to have a good voice, or sheer musicality. Hard work on every aspect of one’s performance was needed to make the next step. I can’t thank Associated Studios enough.’

Developing innovative new writing

Developing new writing in Musical Theatre, Opera and Theatre in general, as well as mounting new work is expensive. Although it is hugely worthwhile, and a considerable asset to our society, it is also a highly risky business. Truly talented writer-creators require disciplined nurturing in order to facilitate innovative work. The Associated Studios has strongly supported this by running regular new writing workshops based at the Royal Court Theatre and other venues. Performers, Writers, Lyricists, Composers and Directors are brought together to work on projects and seed commissions.

How you can help us to continue this invaluable work

As a charitable organization Associated Studios requires financial support from companies, trusts and individuals who appreciate the performing arts and want to be involved with the contributions performers, writer/creators and arts organizations make to the socio-cultural fabric of the country. Performers and theatre practitioners tend not to command high incomes and often need to take on additional work to survive. West End ensemble rates, as well as touring rates are either close to or below the minimum wage. As a result it is exceedingly difficult for young performers and theatre practitioners to find the necessary cash to participate in the much needed ongoing professional development work required to keep their skills finely tuned and their confidence high. With your help, our mission – to strengthen talent, support innovative work and build community connections – will become a truly rewarding driving force in the performing arts.

In return we will work closely with sponsors. To ensure you feel involved in our activities we will adopt an open door policy where sponsors will be welcomed to watch master classes, rehearsals and development work.

Brad Cohen (Conductor): ‘I believe that the Opera Course offers young and aspiring singers valuable opportunities to connect with professionals, outside of the traditional music college environment. The expertise we can share, coupled with the nurturing and challenging environment provided by Leontine Hass and her team, combine to stimulate and provoke singers as they prepare for the rigours of a performing career.’

David Suchet (Actor): ‘An actor expresses through mind, body, and voice. Each must always be finely tuned. Impossible without continued check-ups. The Associated Studios provides professional performing artists with the opportunity for such work to continue. It is not only necessary but also invaluable.’

Sir Tim Rice (Lyricist): ‘Aspiring musical theatre performers need a thorough training, not only to develop and perfect their craft but to understand the importance of discipline, hard-work and passion. The Associated Studios will prepare you for a competitive but thrilling business and inspire you as a performer. You will be working with brilliant practitioners who have an extraordinary wealth of knowledge.’

Jamie Lambert (Singer)The Associated Studios has given me confidence, improved my vocal skills and introduced me to some of the best industry practitioners. It has confirmed my passion and prepared me for working in a competitive but thrilling business.
