Lydia’s first connection to The Associated Studios was as a participant in the early days back in 2007, attending song presentation classes every Sunday at The Royal Academy of Music. Already teaching singing at Italia Conti, Lydia covered at Mountview in the early days of 2008 and by the September had taken over Leo’s regular teaching there on her recommendation. Eight years later Lydia is still teaching regularly at Mountview, has also directed at GSA and is about to start at The Urdang Academy.
Vocally Lydia has an eclectic background. Her classical beginning changed dramatically whilst studying Music and Drama at Brunel University. Here she changed her singing focus to Jazz and Gospel and had the privilege of studying with Anita Wardell – another Associated Studios tutor. After graduating Lydia started teaching singing for Surrey County Arts and developed a wide-spanning career working as a teacher, performer and director, playing roles such as Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd. Through this time she studied singing with yet another Associated Studios tutor, Patricia Sabin.
As a vocal coach her passion is to give each student as many of the keys that she can to enable them to unlock the potential of their voices understanding stylistically what is required of each song and promoting vocal health. The student is king and it is the teacher who needs to change to enable the learning to occur but coupled with this, the acting must take precedence as a strong voice is not enough to sustain a career. Working in any vocal style you can see past and present students in a variety of professional jobs; from BVs for Laura Mvula, MOBO award winning artists through to a whole raft of musicals from Les Mis, Wicked, In the Heights, Porgy and Bess and Alien’s Stole My Underpantsto name a few!
