New Writing

ASSOCIATED STUDIOS are committed to working with writers, composers and lyricists to encourage their new writing.

Developing and mounting new writing in Musical Theatre, Opera and Theatre is an expensive a highly risky business. At Associated Studios, however, we recognise that it is also hugely worthwhile, and a considerable asset to our society. Truly talented writers and creators require disciplined nurturing in order to facilitate the creation of innovative new work.

The Associated Studios has strongly supported a number of writers by running regular new writing workshops based at the Royal Court Theatre and other venues. Performers, Writers, Lyricists, Composers and Directors are brought together to work on projects and seed commissions.

Previous projects have included:

Matt Brind – Only The Brave

Composer Matt Brind workshopped his musical Only The Brave with a group of 10 singers. The piece has recently been premiered at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

Michael Jeffrey – Il Postino

BAFTA award winning Composer Michael Jaffrey workshopped his new musical Il Postino with a group of 12 singers.

Additionally we encourage the performance of new writing, both drama and musical theatre,  in all of our performance courses.

From 2017, we are also running a NEW WRITING SEMINAR PROGRAMME for Drama and Musical Theatre writing, with leading composers, authors and lyricists, together with creating a unique bi-monthly NEW WRITING PERFORMANCE PLATFORM at a leading venue in Central London.  At this event, students from Associated Studios will work with writers, composers, lyricists and creatives on new work, which will then be showcased in a West End Venue.
