Dr. Ian Andrew is a teacher, performer, composer, pianist, musical director, accompanist and lecturer with more than fifteen years’ experience in the performing arts. He completed a Ph.D. in Music Studies at the Elder Conservatorium while studying voice under the guidance of Opera Australia’s Peter Hopkins before moving to Melbourne and studying musical theatre at APO Arts Academy and voice with West-End performer Derek Taylor.
Ian is an active and passionate actor and musician and has performed principal roles in numerous operas and musicals in Victoria and interstate. His most recent screen credits include ABC series The Newsreader and SBS series Hungry Ghosts. Recent stage credits include Jim Hopper in the Australian premiere of Stranger Sings, Charlie in Kinky Boots, Simon Stride in Jekyll & Hyde and Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar, as well as the role of Lon in Cloudstreet with the State Opera SA. In 2017 he received the MTGV Award for ‘Best Supporting Actor in a Musical’ for the role of Trevor Graydon in Thoroughly Modern Millie and was awarded ASME Young Composer of the Year for five consecutive years. He is frequently engaged as a vocal coach, lecturer in vocal anatomy and music theory, and as a musical director and arranger.
